Are you familiar with bruxism? Bruxism refers to an oral health condition in which you grind your teeth, often while you sleep. If left unchecked, bruxism can cause damage to your teeth, gums, and jaw. Due to its occurrence often while you sleep, it can be difficult to spot, but there are indications that bruxism may be occurring.

If you have a sleep partner or roommate, ask them if they ever hear or notice that you are grinding your teeth loudly at night, or often unconsciously clenching your jaw. In addition, there are numerous signs and symptoms you may feel when you wake up in the morning, including facial pain, tired or tight jaw muscles, headaches, earaches, and a general sense of jaw soreness. If you experience any symptoms, bruxism may be to blame.

Physical indications of bruxism are often visible in your teeth. If you have flat teeth, or teeth are flattened, it may be an indication of bruxism. Further symptoms include worn tooth enamel, a locked jaw that won’t fully open or close, cheek tissue damage on the inner linings of your cheeks, and indentations on your tongue. Should you be displaying signs of bruxism, visit your dentist for an oral examination.
