Dr. Steven Rodriguez and our dental team want your child to have the healthiest smile possible, as we’re sure you do too. In order to make that possible, you need to do all you can to care for your child’s teeth and gums. To help you do so, we have some recommendations for you.

First, we recommend bringing your child in to see Dr. Steven Rodriguez six months after the first tooth erupts or around their first birthday. Bringing them into our office at a young age can help your child feel comfortable in the dental chair. It can also help them get to know their dentist and form a strong relationship with him. Lastly, it can help you care for your child’s smile because it gives you a chance to ask questions and it allows our team to give you tips and information.

Second, we recommend cleaning your child’s smile regularly. If they don’t have teeth quite yet, wipe their gums with a wet washcloth after each feeding or meal. If your child does have teeth, use a baby or child-sized toothbrush and scrub their little chompers with water. They don’t need toothpaste till they are about 2-3 years old.

Third, we recommend keeping baby bottle tooth decay at bay. You can do so by only giving your child milk or formula in their bottle. It’s best to avoid giving them sugary drinks at all costs, especially when they go to bed. If you do give them juice, chocolate milk, or another sugary drink, please do so when they eat a meal.
