Does your tooth require root canal therapy? Root canal therapy is often used for teeth that have been damaged to the point that the root of a tooth is exposed, often due to the breakdown of tooth enamel. When this happens, bacteria can damage the pulp within a tooth, resulting in infections and eventual tooth loss.

If a tooth infection has occurred, it can be fixed with a root canal. If left untreated, the tooth will need to be extracted. Root canals work by cleaning the area around the tooth and safely and effectively remove the damaged pulp. If the pulp is still undamaged, despite a hole in the tooth enamel, the hole can be closed without yet needing to remove the pulp.

The pulp is important to a tooth because it is its life force. This is where a tooth’s connective tissues, blood vessels, and nerve endings all rest. If it is damaged, it must be removed with a root canal treatment or the entire tooth will decay and die off, leading to an inevitable extraction.
