Is one of your deepest fears to lose teeth and have an incomplete smile? If so, then you need to be aware of the leading causes of tooth loss and how to avoid them. Dr. Steven Rodriguez will be happy to share that information with you so you know a little more about how to keep your smile and oral health in tip-top shape.

Leading cause No. 1: Gum disease. Gum disease attacks the mouth when plaque does not get removed from your pearly whites on a regular basis. The plaque grows on the teeth and infects the gums. This makes the gums move away from the base of the teeth, exposing the roots and creating pockets. Then, the plaque turns into tartar (an extremely toxic substance) and it moves into the pockets. As time passes, it moves to the underlying bone and starts deteriorating it, which results in loose and lost teeth. It’s important to avoid this disease by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting Dr. Steven Rodriguez every six months.

Leading cause No. 2: Tooth decay. Tooth decay harms the smile when you fail to clean your teeth regularly (by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting your dentist) and when you have a high-carbohydrate diet. The decay attacks the teeth and creates cavities. If it’s caught early, it’s usually not too much trouble to treat. However, if you avoid treating it, it can spread and destroy the entire chomper. Then, tooth extraction is the only option left.

Leading cause No. 3: Oral injury. Unfortunately, some oral injuries result in knocked-out teeth or teeth that are so damaged that they need to be extracted. Oftentimes, oral injuries occur when you participate in high-contact sports or activities without adequate smile protection. So, please remember to wear a proper mouthguard while you are active.
